MULTI HEAD POT FILLING MACHINE

FOOD PROCESSING

A large UK continental and gourmet food manufacturer relied on manual labour of up to 20 production staff per shift to produce 2-3 olives pots per minute. The manual operation achieved a production rate of 2400-3600 completed pots of olives per hour.

To automate this labour intensive and costly process, we designed a bespoke machine by developing a concept for a multihead weighing and pot filling system. The aim of the project was to reduce the manning levels on the line to 2 operators – with one operator responsible for the trolley transfer from preparation area to the line, and the other topping up the linear pot filling machine with olives and managing the other machinery on the line including the densester carton replenishment, oiling applicator top up, pot sealing machine, weigher supervision and rework of rejected pots. Prior to finalising layout drawings and operations criteria, Rospen engineers proof tested performance in our test plant to ensure performance, accuracy and reliability.

The final design was a single compartmented buffer hopper located on a mezzanine frame with eight vibratory feed lanes and eight high accuracy (+/- 1 gram) weigh hoppers, serviced by a trolley column lifter to raise the trays of olives from floor level to the buffer hopper. On completion of installation the Rospen Multi Head Pot Filling Machine achieved operational performance of 115% of target performance.

ROSPEN’s scope of work included:

  • Test, design, manufacture & installation of the system.
  • Bespoke design of the mezzanine, buffer hopper, vibratory trays and weigh heads.
  • Specification, procurement and integration of the trolley column lifter.
  • Design and build of the PLC, HMI, electromagnetic drive control centre and safety circuit panel.
  • Design and development of the PLC and HMI control software, data logging software and interfaces with the denester & chain conveyor.
  • Factory acceptance testing of the multihead pot-filling machine.
  • Mechanical installation of equipment and full commissioning.
  • Training of clients’ production and maintenance personnel on the operation, assembly/disassembly, cleaning and maintenance of the equipment.

The machine runs faultlessly at over 60 pots per minute (140 gram target) at less than 2% giveaway with a weighing resolution < 0.5g. With a small footprint, the machine is suitable for factories with low headroom. Additionally, the machine can be configured for a variety of bulk food products and custom-designed to handle different pot or tray dimensions.
