PRE-BLENDING OF POWDERS

An international supplier of a malt drink presented with a requirement to supply a pre-blended mixture of four ingredients to a mixing process 70 metres away from the main mixing room.

The confined space within the plant precluded the more traditional batch-mixing approach using a conventional blender.

On site, four hoist-loaded FIBC dischargers were arranged in a cluster, enabling the use of high-accuracy loss-in-weight feeders to deliver powders at a controlled rate while accurately matching the batch requirements.

Next, a vacuum system conveyed components to a receiving hopper 70 metres away, where powder was discharged into a final high accuracy Rospen for onward dispensing.

Using one of Rospen’s many weighing subroutines, one ingredient served as the master feed, while the remaining three served as slave feeds. Any fluctuation in feed rate led to a corresponding response from the other three feeders, ensuring product consistency throughout. All four ingredients were discharged into a vacuum-receiving take off bin and subsequently entrained in the air flow. During this transfer, the four ingredients were sufficiently homogenised to require no further blending prior to addition to the main malted base powder.
