TITANIUM DIOXIDE FEEDING

PAINTS AND PIGMENTS

Titanium Dioxide (TiO2) is widely used across a variety of industries, accounting for ~70% of the total production volume of pigments in the world. It is a very fine powder that provides whiteness and opacity to paints, coatings, plastics, paper, inks, fibres, foods and cosmetics. TiO2 is a notoriously difficult bulk material to handle and process, as the fine particle size of the material and its high level of internal friction can lead to a variety of flow problems.

Due to its very poor flowing nature, TiO2 tends to form material bridges inside of hoppers or can form a “rat hole”. It is not uncommon for an incorrectly designed vessel to completely block. Equipment must be designed with optimised geometry and incorporate discharge aids such as types of mechanical agitators, air fluidizers or vibrators to promote flow.

A leading pigment company approached Rospen with a requirement to accurately feed TiO2 into a pneumatic conveying line. The temperature of the material was 250°C. Rospen designed a custom twin screw loss-in-weight feeder with a rotary valve flow aid in the agitator chamber to aid product flow and provide accurate dosing.
